Paired alongside, Live And Dangerous, Thin Lizzy’s other live album released the same year this one was recorded, The Boys Are Back In Town, Live At The Sydney Opera House is essential for even the most casual Thin Lizzy fan. Along with Lynott, the incarnation of the band that day featured Scott Gorham and Gary Moore on guitars and Mark Nauseef on drums. The emotional core of the doc though are interviews with his wife (Caroline Taraskevics) and daughters (Sarah and Cathleen Lynott) giving the film much more depth than the average rock documentary.īut it’s the Sydney concert which is worth the price of the set alone. The band were led throughout their recording career by bassist, songwriter and singer Phil Lynott, and are best known for their songs Whiskey in the Jar, Jailbreak and The Boys Are Back in Town, all major international hits still played regularly on hard rock and classic rock radio stations. The documentary chronicles Lynott’s life and legacy pairing old footage with current interviews from musicians across a slew of disparate genres from Huey Lewis (longtime friend of Lynott) to Midge Urge (who was a touring member of Thin Lizzy in 1979-80 before forging a career in New Wave/synth pop) and fellow Irishman U2’s Adam Clayton. Thin Lizzy are an Irish hard rock band who formed in Dublin, Ireland in 1969. After Thin Lizzy wrapped up their successful 'farewell' tour, their second live album was issued. The package makes for a wildly satisfying trek into the life of one of the best bands to ever come out of Ireland. Mercury Records have just released a DVD/ version of the show, alongside a CD of the set and paired those with the 2020 Blu ray documentary Phil Lynott – Songs For While I’m Away. But on this fall day in Sydney, backdropped by the iconic venue, the band proved just how remarkably powerful they could be, barreling through more than a dozen songs and cementing their reputation as one of the best blues-soaked hard rock bands to come out of that decade if not generation. They would have one more great record in them (1979’s Black Rose) and a couple of mediocre albums before calling it a day in 1983.
